Fuck those Navy Seals and fuck Obama. Fuck the Democrats for sounding like a bunch of chest-thumping capitalist GOP-voting motherfuckers.
Here's a cursory glance at what's really going on with the piracy:
Johann Hari: You Are Being Lied to About Pirates
Pirates seen as not interested in raising violence
And even those two articles miss some pretty important parts of the picture.
Since when is it "good leadership" to have trained experts kill a handful of desperate fishermen striking back at those whom are responsible for their desperation with a couple of guns that they really don't want to use to begin with? Since when do "negotiations" hinge on the arresting of these fishermen so they can be "brought to justice"? Do you want justice? Arrest the motherfuckers that have been illegally overfishing Somali waters. Arrest the motherfuckers that have been dumping toxic waste off the coast of Somalia. Arrest the Islamofascist douchebags trying to impose a theocratic dictatorship in Mogadishu. Arrest the gov't PR people and the media that spread pro-capitalist propaganda.
By the way, the ransom money? Most of it is going to the building of infrastructure in northern Somalia. Food, medical care, education, et cetera. Does that sound like terrorism to you? Does that sound like a big fucking deal that we need to send in armed professionals to kill?
Fuck all.

Are you honestly arguing that any and all cargo ships passing through a major international chokepoint deserve to be hijacked at random because Westerners are stealing their radioactive fish? Isn't that a bit like saying any car driving through Compton deserves to be hijacked on account of generations of inequality, racism, socioeconomic suppression and police brutality? Or, alternately, that if the MS-13 built a free clinic that gangbanging would somehow be acceptable?
I'm not denying the immensity of Somali grievances, the illegality of Western poaching and dumping, or the misery they experience and the complicity of world powers in it. Everything you say about their behavior is true. But the issue of piracy in the Gulf of Aden is significantly more complex than the counterspin that a highly complex organized piracy ring is somehow tantamount to a Somali coast guard. To say otherwise is all very Hakim Bey, and not in a good way.
Incidentally, Jamie Zawinski has an interesting debate going on about exactly this issue, and I'd be interested in seeing your take on it.
